  • BEH Weekly Family Message

    Hello BEH Families,

It is officially the last week of the 2023/24 school year. I can't believe we are closing out the year and about to go on summer break. As usual, we still have a lot going on at BEH this week, so please make sure and get your students here consistently this week, as they will not want to miss any of it. Here are some of the upcoming events to remember:

    Yearbooks:
Our amazing PTA has put together another amazing yearbook for this school year, and it will be sent home for free with all students. Keep your eye out this week for it to be sent home.

    Lost & Found:
If your child has lost a coat or other items over the last few weeks, please remember to come and check the lost and found in the hallway outside of the office. Anything left after the school year has ended will be donated to the PPS Clothes Closet.

    5th Grade Promotion:
We will have our 5th Grade Promotion Ceremony this Thursday, June 13th, at 5:30 in the BEH Gym. Please get students here 15 minutes early to get set up and ready.

    PK Promotion:
We will hold our PK promotion in the gym on Friday, June 14th at 9:00. Students need to be to their classrooms by 8:45 so that they can get set-up and families can wait in the gym for the ceremony to begin.

    Kindergarten Promotion:
Our Kindergarten promotion will be held in the gym at 10:00 on Friday, June 14th. Students should be at school on time at 8:45 so that they can practice and prepare before the ceremony begins.

    Juneteenth Celebration:
On the afternoon of the last day of school (Friday, June 14th) we will have one final school gathering to talk about Juneteenth as a community. We will have the Norman Sylvester Band joining us to share their music as well. This will be accompanied by some treats for the students and wrapping up the day with some fun competition between our 5th graders and our staff in a kickball game.

Last Day of School & Report Cards:
The last day of school for students is this Friday, June 14th. Next week, teachers will be working on completing report cards and closing up classrooms for the summer. We will mail report cards home by the end of the week and you should receive them by the following week at the latest. If you have questions or paperwork to complete with the office, you should get it done by Tuesday, June 18th, as the office will be closed following this date.

    Blick Art Supplies Donation:

Blick Art Materials plans to donate art supplies to BEH for our art programming for next year and will begin collecting donations in BLICK retail locations on June 3rd and continue through July 14th. During that period, each customer who purchases art materials for donation to BEH will receive an exclusive 20% off entire transaction thank you coupon, valid on purchases made 7/15/24 - 7/31/24. They will have donation bins and signage set up in stores, plus plenty of online marketing activity planned over the next several weeks.

    Summer Health Center Options:
Two student health centers will be open for health services over summer break:
    • Parkrose Student Health Center June 17-August 23
    • David Douglas Student Health Center - July 23-August 21 ( Tuesdays-Thursdays)
All other Multnomah County student health centers will be closed. Call for an appointment.

I always miss seeing our students consistently over the summer. I hope that everyone has some fun plans with family and friends, and please stay safe for the break. I will be around this summer and continuing to track emails, so if you have any questions or anything comes up that I can help with, please don't hesitate to reach out and let me know.

    Take care,
    Mr. Kaveh

  • Earthstock Brings the Joy to the Crystal Ballroom

Two students dance at Earthstock 2024.

A little over 30 years ago, a Madison High School student named Joseph Janson had a simple wish. He wanted to go to a dance. But nothing was simple for Joseph, who was born with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and was confined to a wheelchair.

He confided his wish to Tony Nitz, who at that time was an educational assistant at Madison (now Leodis V. McDaniel High School). Tony had been working one-on-one with Joseph for months and he immediately went about making the young man’s dream come true.

“The truth is, I would have done anything for Joseph,” Nitz said. “He was a unique person, and we had a very special bond.”

This is a photo of Madi Bourdon's book, A Kid's Book About Chosen Family.

Madi Bourdon’s first book practically wrote itself.

  • Mission Accomplished: Roosevelt Senior Helps Green Card Holders Obtain U.S. Citizenship

     Alondra in the Classroom

For the past three years, Alondra Nieves Barajas has been both student and teacher.

Most days, the senior from Roosevelt High School attends class, does her homework, and spends time with her friends just like any other 18-year-old. But on Wednesday nights, you can find her at the front desk, teaching adults – often much older than herself – the ins and outs of the United States naturalization test.

  • PPS Senior Program Manager of Energy & Sustainability Invited to White House Summit

When Aaron Presberg first got the email from the White House, he thought it was some sort of prank.

Then he shared the message with a few colleagues who assured him that it was no joke, and the exciting reality that he had been invited to Washington, D.C. to present at the White House’s first-ever Summit for Sustainable and Healthy K–12 School Buildings and Grounds started to sink in.
