  • Hey all, happy warm Thursday!

Tomorrow is Spirit Day...although it may also be beneficial to be Shorts Day as it is going to be a hot one!

This week has been full of celebration for all the teachers and staff! Thanks to everyone who donated to the amazing brunch on Wednesday....now we need some recipes! If your child hasn't yet, there is still time to have them draw a picture or write a letter of what they appreciate about their teacher or other adult at Vestal that they appreciate.

Huge thanks to our amazing PTA for all of their support and gifts this week!

On a personal note- I needed to be away from school today (and I will be again tomorrow) as my father has to undergo major surgery and is needing a lot of support. I texted a friend from the hospital today saying, "Boy, I sure enjoy a school more than a hospital." I really dislike being away from school, but I am thankful Vestal is such a strong community. I'll be spending the night in his hospital room tonight...wish me luck.

    Vestal Peace, Sabrina

Please read this great note from Ms. Hazen-

    Hello Everyone,

Here's what's happening in library this week! We are celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage all month through the authors we are reading ♥️

In 4th and 5th grade, we are coding using Scratch. Our first project is redesigning the Google logo. Ask your kiddo to show you what they have coded so far!

In 3rd and 2nd we are doing a nonfiction study with Jason Chin books. This week, we read his nonfiction Redwoods and summarized the facts presented in the book as well as drew sketches of the Redwoods and forest animals.

In 1st and Kinder, we read Juna's Jar by Jane Bahk, and then made our own special jars. We continue to practice making connections in text, comparing and contrasting stories we have read throughout the year, and finding patterns in the author's writing.

Summer reading promotion will start in a couple of weeks! For more information you can go to https://multcolib.org/summer-reading. You can find online game boards here,

Also! May 24th we are having a Laps for Reading event to raise money for Reading Results and field trips. Below are the details, and I will be the contact if you have questions.

  • Earthstock Brings the Joy to the Crystal Ballroom

Two students dance at Earthstock 2024.

A little over 30 years ago, a Madison High School student named Joseph Janson had a simple wish. He wanted to go to a dance. But nothing was simple for Joseph, who was born with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and was confined to a wheelchair.

He confided his wish to Tony Nitz, who at that time was an educational assistant at Madison (now Leodis V. McDaniel High School). Tony had been working one-on-one with Joseph for months and he immediately went about making the young man’s dream come true.

“The truth is, I would have done anything for Joseph,” Nitz said. “He was a unique person, and we had a very special bond.”

  • Mission Accomplished: Roosevelt Senior Helps Green Card Holders Obtain U.S. Citizenship

     Alondra in the Classroom

For the past three years, Alondra Nieves Barajas has been both student and teacher.

Most days, the senior from Roosevelt High School attends class, does her homework, and spends time with her friends just like any other 18-year-old. But on Wednesday nights, you can find her at the front desk, teaching adults – often much older than herself – the ins and outs of the United States naturalization test.

  • PPS Senior Program Manager of Energy & Sustainability Invited to White House Summit

When Aaron Presberg first got the email from the White House, he thought it was some sort of prank.

Then he shared the message with a few colleagues who assured him that it was no joke, and the exciting reality that he had been invited to Washington, D.C. to present at the White House’s first-ever Summit for Sustainable and Healthy K–12 School Buildings and Grounds started to sink in.
