June 7, 2024
I hope that you are all looking forward to some quality time with our Wolves this summer! We will miss them! This will be our last Family Communication for the 2023-24 school year.
We have some very exciting news to share with our family community! After many years of hard work and dedication from our school Educators, we received notification that WSMS will be authorized as an official IB MYP school! This is such an elite honor for our school, and it makes WSMS the only comprehensive Middle School in PPS with IB MYP authorization! Once our items are signed by our PPS leaders, we will be added to this map, and you can see how few MYP IB Middle Schools actually exist. Thank you to all of the family members who supported this work through joining interviews, giving feedback and through your belief in our school team to accomplish this goal, in spite of many interruptions throughout the last several school years! We did it, in spite of so many educational disruptions over the past several years, and this is something to be very proud of for our entire school community!
On Monday, many students ran hard for the Run for the Homeless fundraiser. Thank you to all of our family members who joined to help count laps! It was wonderful to have extra eyes on the event! This was our first attempt at such an event, and we learned many lessons on how to improve this process for the future! The leaders for each grade are below, and we thank all who donated or supported the effort as a larger multi-grade MYP service activity.
6th Grade: Anna DeKoker, Alex Usher, Xavier Olivares
7th Grade: Chester Essink, Oliver Dimoff, Tate Segal, Barkot Tiruneh
7th Grade: Greta DeKoker, Nidhi Shastry, Raegan
8th Grade: Henry Tachouet, Julia Olivares
Next week is the final week of school, and there are a number of activities built in to add some fun to our students’ final week together. Important dates are listed below. There is no Advisory class all week to allow each period to be a little longer for final items, and the revised bell schedule can be viewed here. If your family is leaving early for vacation, and your student may not finish out next week, please have them communicate with their teachers so that they may turn in any items early, clean out their locker, turn in their books and Chromebook and excuse their absences prior to leaving. To report any missing days, please email westsylvanoffice@pps.net.

There are many opportunities for students to access rate and level instruction in mathematics in our current K-5 and middle school curricula (iReady and Mid-School Math). At times, there are students whose rate and level needs might be better served through Single Subject Acceleration in Math (SSA-M). The purpose of this procedure is to outline the guidelines and process for SSA-M for students currently in non-credit bearing mathematics courses at grade 2 or above. SSA-M is considered in the spring for the following school year.

A little over 30 years ago, a Madison High School student named Joseph Janson had a simple wish. He wanted to go to a dance. But nothing was simple for Joseph, who was born with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and was confined to a wheelchair.
He confided his wish to Tony Nitz, who at that time was an educational assistant at Madison (now Leodis V. McDaniel High School). Tony had been working one-on-one with Joseph for months and he immediately went about making the young man’s dream come true.
“The truth is, I would have done anything for Joseph,” Nitz said. “He was a unique person, and we had a very special bond.”
Madi Bourdon’s first book practically wrote itself.
According to the Glencoe Elementary School counselor and Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) coordinator, it only took them an hour and a half to finish A Kid’s Book About Chosen Family, which came out this March with A Kid’s Co. publishing.
For the past three years, Alondra Nieves Barajas has been both student and teacher.
Most days, the senior from Roosevelt High School attends class, does her homework, and spends time with her friends just like any other 18-year-old. But on Wednesday nights, you can find her at the front desk, teaching adults – often much older than herself – the ins and outs of the United States naturalization test.
When Aaron Presberg first got the email from the White House, he thought it was some sort of prank.
Then he shared the message with a few colleagues who assured him that it was no joke, and the exciting reality that he had been invited to Washington, D.C. to present at the White House’s first-ever Summit for Sustainable and Healthy K–12 School Buildings and Grounds started to sink in.

Forecasting for the 2024-25 school year is concluding! Students have been selecting their choices through Advisory classes. For World Languages, if a student takes French or Spanish in 7th grade, they would continue in that same World Language through 8th grade, as mastering the content in 8th grade then results in High School credits. Once High School begins, students can always choose to explore a new language at LHS, as they have so many more options to choose from, too!
The materials can be reviewed at the links below, so that you may help your Scholar make informed decisions for next school year.

This next year, all PPS Middle Schools will be using a SEVEN course/day model. Depending on course designs, they will be offered as full year, semester, or quarter-long classes. The following courses will be required, in order to meet our district and Middle Years Programs.
In addition, all electives need to fall under the MYP descriptions for "DESIGN" and "ART". All students will be expected to take at least one elective from each category, which will automatically be included in schedules, excluding BAND, CHOIR, or AVID.
MYP Elective courses will include ART, S.T.E.A.M., MUSIC, and possibly one or two others that are yet to be determined, based on staffing. Band or Choir will be taken as a full year elective and count for 2 semesters, leaving one semester of another elective available.
