Hi Riders,
It’s hard to believe another year is almost over. This week - we have two days of classes and three days of finals. Please make sure your student uses flex time at the end of each day if they need to finish assignments or tests. Teachers are available Wednesday and Thursday from 1:50 to 3:45 and Friday from 12:15 to 3:45.
At the end of July, look in the mail and your email for information about next year. We will be changing our cell phone policy at the beginning of next year. Students are expected to have their phones off and away during class time. If you need to get ahold of your student and it’s an emergency, make sure you call the main office. Students will not have access to their phones during class time. We know that phones can be a powerful learning tool and they can also be a major distraction. We want students focused on classwork during the school day.

Hi Riders,
Sorry this is coming out later than usual. We had an amazing graduation celebration yesterday and sent the class of 2024 out into the world. It’s always a day of mixed emotions for me. I am so proud of our students and the work they have done to be ready for their beyond high school journey, and I am going to miss this group of students walking through the halls of Roosevelt. A huge thank you to our support staff, counselors, and teachers for their ongoing support of our students!

Hi Riders,
It’s a great day to be a Rider! Our prom was on Saturday night. It was so great to see our students dressed up and celebrating. Thanks to Sierra Hill, our leadership students, and all the parent and staff volunteers. We couldn’t have had such a special night without everyone’s help! Our track athletes competed at state this weekend and district tennis was last week as well. As always, there are some celebrations and some disappointments, but our Riders are competing at the state and district levels in ways we haven’t seen in decades. Every student-athlete should be proud!
Next week is our seniors’ last week of school. Graduation is on Sunday, June 2nd at 4:00pm. Seniors will begin getting cleared for graduation this week. If you are a parent of a senior, check the senior webpage for more information - https://www.pps.net/domain/5719

Last Friday, we held our annual student led Unity Fest. It was an amazing evening of food, performances, and celebration of our diverse community at Roosevelt. Huge thanks to our students who planned the evening! On Saturday, our boys’ basketball team were the Grand Marshalls for the annual St. Johns Parade. Our dance team, theatre troupe, and band also participated and helped to lead the parade.
This week, we will be hosting an opportunity for the community to hear about plans to add classrooms to Roosevelt. Join us on Wednesday, May 15th from 4:30 - 6:00 in the library. Hope to see you there!

Hi Riders,
It’s hard to believe that we will be starting May this week! Last week, our peer mediation program showed off their new space to some different news organizations. If your student is having an issue, they can talk to Ms. Asay or their counselor to set up a peer mediation session.
Progress reports are due next Thursday, so make sure your student is getting all of their assignments and assessments completed. Reach out to teachers or your student’s counselor if you have questions or need anything.

Hi Riders,
Congratulations to our track team! The girls’ sprint medley relay broke a 34 year record this weekend! Our track and field program is amazing! Come check it out at the home meet next week. Thanks to everyone who came to Saturday School. We had over 65 students here!
Juniors and Seniors are getting ready for prom! Make sure your student has 80% or better attendance. If not, have your student talk to their attendance coach to make a contract. We want all students to participate in prom, and we want to make sure that everyone is coming to class, passing classes, and doing what is needed to be ready to graduate.

Hi Riders,
It’s hard to believe we are starting the last quarter of the school year! Look for report cards in your mailbox at the end of this week. If you have a senior, check their grades and reach out now to make plans with teachers so your student finishes strong! Graduation is June 2nd at 4:00pm at Providence Park. Senior’s last day is May 31st, so there isn’t a lot of time to finish up late work if seniors are not finishing the year strong.
As we move into spring, Roosevelt is busy. Spring sports, concerts, and end of the year celebrations are all happening in April and May. Check Trivory and this newsletter for more information.

Happy April! It’s hard to believe that we are moving into the last quarter of the school year. There is no school on Friday for teachers to grade and plan for fourth quarter. There is school next Monday (that’s a change from the calendar at the beginning of the year). Please reach out if you or your student has questions about grades or assignments.

Hi Riders,
What a weekend! Our boys’ basketball team placed 2nd in state during the state tournament. Our band was amazing at each game and our cheer team was so positive and such great leaders for our student section! Our Oregon Battle of the Books team placed 5th, and our dance team competed in a competition as they get ready for state competitions next weekend.
Our community showed up in force on Saturday at the Chiles Center to cheer on our Riders. It was amazing to see all of the love and support for our team and our school from the larger St. Johns and Portland community! Shout out to the Peninsula Optimist Club for their generous donation to purchase student tickets for each of the playoff games! We will celebrate with the team, our band, the cheer squad, and our fans at a very brief assembly this afternoon at the end of the day.
It’s a great day to be a Rider!

Hi Riders,
Happy March! This weekend is our first Saturday school this term. The link to sign up is below.
The weather should be getting better soon, so it’s important to talk to your student about being a good community member during lunch. Fred Meyer continues to ask students to not bring their backpack in to the store at lunch. Some students are leaving their backpacks at the front door of Fred Meyer and a few of those bags have been stolen. Remind your student to leave their bag in their locker at lunch time. We don’t want anyone getting their bag and/or chromebook stolen.
We have changed the student check-out process at the office. If a student is leaving campus, we are asking that they sign out and get parent approval before they leave. We want your student in class, so please remind them to stay in school or have you communicate with the attendance office if they have an appointment.

Hi Riders,
I shared a few hours ago that our building had some vandalism and graffiti when we got here this morning. I want to say thank you to our custodial staff for responding so quickly and helping to get the building ready for students. Thank you to the teachers and other staff who helped to cover the graffiti so that students wouldn’t see it as they entered the building and went to classes. I am always so grateful to our community and how we come together in moments like this.
This is the last week of winter sports. Shout out to swimming and wrestling who both had students qualify for state! Our boys’ basketball team will be heading to state this year as well and will likely be the PIL champs!
Huge shout out to Jo Lane and our theatre program. They were selected to be the first high school in Oregon to perform “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” which is now being performed off Broadway. I know our students will create an amazing production! Our Constitution Team is continuing to grow and had another great showing at the Con Team competition a few weeks ago. Finally - congratulations to our Jazz Band for their multiple qualifiers for state!

Hi Riders,
Today is Hoodies Up Day at Roosevelt. We honor the memory of Trayvon Martin - a 17-year-old black boy that was shot and killed in Florida while walking through a neighborhood. The acquittal of George Zimmerman led Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi to begin the Black Lives Matter movement. Today is Trayvon’s birthday, and it is also the first day of our Black Lives Matter week of action for the start of Black History Month. This week, teachers wil be teaching about different aspects of the Black Lives Matter movement and Black History that are connected to their content. Shout out to Mr. David Massey - a ninth grade seminar teacher - for his lesson teaching students the history of the Civil Rights movement and the Black Live Matters movement and the connections to Portland history. Thanks to our Black Student Union and Leadership students for their work on this event and others to celebrate Black History Month.

A little over 30 years ago, a Madison High School student named Joseph Janson had a simple wish. He wanted to go to a dance. But nothing was simple for Joseph, who was born with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and was confined to a wheelchair.
He confided his wish to Tony Nitz, who at that time was an educational assistant at Madison (now Leodis V. McDaniel High School). Tony had been working one-on-one with Joseph for months and he immediately went about making the young man’s dream come true.
“The truth is, I would have done anything for Joseph,” Nitz said. “He was a unique person, and we had a very special bond.”
Madi Bourdon’s first book practically wrote itself.
According to the Glencoe Elementary School counselor and Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) coordinator, it only took them an hour and a half to finish A Kid’s Book About Chosen Family, which came out this March with A Kid’s Co. publishing.
For the past three years, Alondra Nieves Barajas has been both student and teacher.
Most days, the senior from Roosevelt High School attends class, does her homework, and spends time with her friends just like any other 18-year-old. But on Wednesday nights, you can find her at the front desk, teaching adults – often much older than herself – the ins and outs of the United States naturalization test.
When Aaron Presberg first got the email from the White House, he thought it was some sort of prank.
Then he shared the message with a few colleagues who assured him that it was no joke, and the exciting reality that he had been invited to Washington, D.C. to present at the White House’s first-ever Summit for Sustainable and Healthy K–12 School Buildings and Grounds started to sink in.
