  • We Must Talk About Race

    Hello Woodstock Families,

My School Counseling colleague Mr. Hildner (Scott K-5) has put together a very useful and comprehensive web page I wanted to share.  Not only is there resources for us as adults and parents, but I also appreciated the age appropriate resources for our kids and students.  We can sometimes not know where to start, and I hope the information and resources on his page helps have these important discussions about race.

    Sincerely,
    Mr. Ponny
  • Season of Sharing

    Dear Families,

For the winter holidays, we are offering some assistance for families that are having difficulty making ends meet. We are currently collecting holiday wish lists from families needing support.

Here is how the program works:

We will be taking referrals for families during the month of November. Families wishing to participate in the program will fill out a wishlist for each child in their home. Please return your child’s wish list by November 12th.  Each wishlist item will be coded, written on a tag and placed on the bulletin board across from Room 1. All names of program participants will be left off the tags and kept confidential. Families that are able to give will take one or more wishlist tags from the bulletin board and shop for those items. They will then bring the wrapped gift(s) or gift card(s) to the office with the tag attached. The tags are very important because they will have the family code written on it to be sure that the gifts go to the appropriate families.  I will contact participating families and distribute the gifts
This is a confidential program. To inquire about participation, please call me at 503-916-6380 or talk to your child's teacher. During the weeks of Nov 12 - Dec 6th, check out the Season of Sharing bulletin board if you would like to fulfill someone's wish! Thank you for your care and concern for our school community.

    Sincerely,

    Ponny Kosmas and Shannon Nicolas

  • Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!

    Hello Families,

We are very excited to see everyone again and meet new faces.  This will be our second year with the Wellness Center and we are looking forward to building on the success of the space from last year.  Please visit the link below to read more information on our Wellness Center, donations we will accept, and our new protocols for students.

In addition to these positive changes, we also have exciting plans for our classroom guidance lessons this year and what we will be teaching all students.  We plan to push in for two 20 minute lessons each month per classroom to deliver the lessons.  Please visit our scope and sequence at the link below for an overview of the lessons for this year.

Last but not least, we will also be welcoming a new half time counselor, Shannon Nicolas, to our building.  Shannon is a fantastic School Counselor and is coming to us from a position at Alameda.  Our former half time counselor Ruth Tessema is moving on to a full time position at ACCESS Academy.  Congratulations Ruth!  In addition to Shannon joining us, we are also lucky to host a School Counseling intern Nathan Stein from Lewis & Clark.  Nathan Stein will be joining us two days a week for the school year!

Thank you and see you all soon!

  • Welcome!

    Hello Woodstock families,
Our goal is to provide a comprehensive counseling program that reaches all students' needs. We follow the ASCA Model that delivers three domains essential for student success: Academic, social/emotional, and career. Within these domains we strive to teach students self regulation skills and social skills that can promote their potential.

"School counselors design and deliver comprehensive school counseling programs that improve a range of student learning and behavioral outcomes. These programs are comprehensive in scope, preventive in design and developmental in nature. 'The ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs' outlines the components of a comprehensive school counseling program. The ASCA National Model brings school counselors together with one vision and one voice, which creates unity and focus toward improving student achievement and supporting student development" (ASCA, 2017).

Please check out our counseling website for more resources and newsletters.

    Sincerely,
    Ponny Kosmas and Ruth Tessema

  • Earthstock Brings the Joy to the Crystal Ballroom

Two students dance at Earthstock 2024.

A little over 30 years ago, a Madison High School student named Joseph Janson had a simple wish. He wanted to go to a dance. But nothing was simple for Joseph, who was born with Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and was confined to a wheelchair.

He confided his wish to Tony Nitz, who at that time was an educational assistant at Madison (now Leodis V. McDaniel High School). Tony had been working one-on-one with Joseph for months and he immediately went about making the young man’s dream come true.

“The truth is, I would have done anything for Joseph,” Nitz said. “He was a unique person, and we had a very special bond.”

  • Mission Accomplished: Roosevelt Senior Helps Green Card Holders Obtain U.S. Citizenship

     Alondra in the Classroom

For the past three years, Alondra Nieves Barajas has been both student and teacher.

Most days, the senior from Roosevelt High School attends class, does her homework, and spends time with her friends just like any other 18-year-old. But on Wednesday nights, you can find her at the front desk, teaching adults – often much older than herself – the ins and outs of the United States naturalization test.

  • PPS Senior Program Manager of Energy & Sustainability Invited to White House Summit

When Aaron Presberg first got the email from the White House, he thought it was some sort of prank.

Then he shared the message with a few colleagues who assured him that it was no joke, and the exciting reality that he had been invited to Washington, D.C. to present at the White House’s first-ever Summit for Sustainable and Healthy K–12 School Buildings and Grounds started to sink in.
